Shared Decision Making

Shared Decision Making (SDM) is essential for everyone who provides or receives health services. It offers a new kind of relationship between health service providers and service users. A more empowering, adult-adult relationship which helps give patients the care they need and no less, the care they want and no more.

Shared Decision Making provides opportunities to tackle a number of problems and challenges inherent in the NHS by:

  • improving patient satisfaction and experience
  •  realising the potential of patients as joint decision makers and joint providers of their own care and recovery – Patients are the greatest untapped resource in healthcare
  • helping people to choose the treatment which is best suited to their personal needs, values and preferences
  • increasing adherence to a chosen treatment
  • improving clinical outcomes
  • improving clinical safety

The Right Care Shared Decision Making Programme is led by NHS East of England  and its overall aim is to embed Shared Decision Making in routine NHS Care.
